| COMMUNIC: "Conspiracy in mind" (Nuclear Blast Records) |
|
Why do some bands make it so hard? Communic completely puzzle me with this debut. The first track "Conspiracy in mind" sounds like a full frontal collision of Fates Warning and Cynic. Brilliantly written techno/prog metal tempting me to hit the repeat button. But hell, you could feel it coming, the second track "History reversed" turns 90 degrees. They go into epic story-telling mode. It’s not all about tight riffing anymore. Not that it’s a bad track, they just keep me waiting for that explosion that isn’t coming, more the classic prog-like sound. Also the next song is the ideal soundtrack to play mediaeval battle scenes on (behold Trik the black knight will conquer the castle). Nevertheless, all you progrockers should have a listen. The do have the dynamics and the technical skills to make a descent album. And they did. >Later on in a track like "Communication sublime", that sounds like Dream Theater on a need for speed in a Corvette, the guys shift to a higher gear again. Don’t have to tell you I prefer this… This is another band that needs to build up a good live reputation. If their shows have the energy of the album, or, as it should be, more of it, then this is the next sensation. I only wish for a more consistent second album. And another Indian summer, a brand new Audi and less sweaty feet. Let’s see. It’s a debut you know… >80/100 >Jowan |
