Very little info on this band from Cramlington in the North-East of England. What I càn tell you is the following : they're a trio comprised of singer/ guitarist Rick Taylor (also the main songwriter), bassist Andrew Allsopp, and drummer Gary Godridge, who get some help on additional (lead) guitar from one G. Richardson. The material is very singer-songwriter stylistically, but with the modern touch of goin' occasionaly heavier. This results in an album with alternating more Rocking and more balladesque songs. Special moments come when Rick also plays piano during the softly Rocking "No Destination Drive", or when Tom Allsopp plays additional mandolin & does additional backing vocals, part of it in spoken word mode while the other is actually singing as well. There's also some additional violin by A.J. Allsopp on the overall softer "Numb", and spoken words come back for "This Star's For Wishing". Overal, the album is rather calm in atmosphere, with the exception of those somewhat heavier, or rather "harder", songs and moments (and to go heavier is not always a guarantee for quality, as sufficiently proven with the rather simple guitar licks of "Forever Fly"), but in essence it all remains in the singer-songwriter area of music. Al though this is already the bands 2 nd full-length release on their own label, I surmise that they should ponder on their new compositions just a bit more in order to deliver quality stuff. The CD-single taken from the album can't exactly be called representative for the bulk of the album, because whereas the title track certainly is of the moderately Rocking singer-songwriter kind, the 2 nd ("Killed By Kindness") starts out much heavier, and sustains that atmosphere throughout most of the song (the ending being very calm again). Still, it's a damn great track...in fact the best of that "harder" category of songs by this trio...or is it foursome? Rating is for the album overall, the single getting 5 points more! 82/100 Tony. |
