CD REVIEW VIIMA
VIIMA: “Ajatuksia Maailman Laidalta” (Viima Records)

Let it be known that it will be hard to find a more convincing acid folk prog rock album this year. Here's catchy melodies and accoustic passages, jazzy breaks, warm female vocal choruses, thundering drumming, crunching guitars, sweeping melodies, multi layered flute and keyboards arrangements, majestic sax, you name it, it's here. The musical variety “ Ajatuksia Maailman Laidalta” has to offer is fascinating. There's an infinite amount of musical material here so that everytime you hear it you catch something new that you haven't heard before. It's absolutely stunning. The songs are lengthy efforts, regularly clocking in at over six minutes, but they never get boring or fall into the common prog rock traps of pretentiousness, woozy balladry or pointless instrumental noodling.

I don't know who this band would appeal to, but I think King Crimson, Camel, Opeth, Gentle Giant and Hypnos 69 fans are open-minded enough to find interest in this great band. What is clear is that Finland has produced another band that just doesn't fit into any easy categories.
