Band: Shadowcry Title: Shadowcry Label: self-release Distribution: Release date: 2008 Review: promo-MCD Sometimes it is bizarre how fast it can go. The Austrian band Shadowcry was formed only two years ago, yet their popularity in their home country hallucinates. Of course MyF*ckin’Space has to do with it, yet I guess also the need of an international-sounding Death/Thrash/Metalcore band in Austria has been of influence. Also the positive reactions by the Austrian and German media, plus the election of ‘band of the month’ on rockforum.at and the many, many gigs (e.g. with Graveworm) they played lay at the basics of this formation’s popularity. This title-less mini-album was recorded in September 2007 and lasts for about twenty minutes. The sound is very decent (Hinterhof Studio) and recording, mix and mastering were done by Robert Leitner, known from Lords Of Decadence. Musically, Shadowcry stands for, as the band states, ‘melodic Death Metal. Partly that’s correct, yet I guess the whole more sounds like a melodic and rhythmic combination of, indeed, Death Metal, modern Metalcore and Thrash Metal. Thomas Knoller’s vocals are very varying: harsh screams and grunts and melodic clean vocals. The compositions itself are firm, pounding and pretty varying in tempo and melody (including acoustic pieces) and even I have to admit that some pieces do not sound bad at all. Nevertheless I’m afraid the band isn’t that original and probably only adepts of, let’s say, everything between In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children Of Bodom and Shadows Fall will get an orgiastic feeling when listening to these songs. Yet nevertheless it is a strong, convincing mini-release, especially for such a young band. 77/100 Ivan Tibos. |
