Review: CD

One of the most technical Death Metal bands from Canada was, and still is, Beneath The Massacre. This time, the band (grunter Elliot Desgagnés, Christopher (g) and Dennis (b) Bradley, and Justin Rousselle-d) entered the Northern Studio with Yannick St-Amand (think about, for example, Ion Dissonance, Neuraxis, Despised Icon, Tears From The Skies etc), the mix has been taken care of by Jason Suecof (who did work behind the knobs for bands as Trivium, Chimaira, All That Remains, God Forbid or Neuraxis, to name a few) at his AudioHammer Studio, and the mastering was done by Alan Douches (West West Side Studio). Dystopia, with a total running time of 32:28 minutes, mainly goes on in the vein of the former album, Mechanics Of Dysfunction, but the evolution the band underwent during the last years, is still progressing. This means that the band evolves more and more from Deathcore to technical Death Metal. In this band’s case, ‘technical’ isn’t just a hollow definition. The ultra-heavy songs are driven by a monstrous rhythm section and cannibalistic riffs, the vocals still seem to come from the deepest pits of the underworlds, and the blasts, breaks and sharp solo-riffs are well-thought and skilled. The equilibrium between Speed / Blast and mid-tempo is nicely balanced, even though the majority of the songs is lightning-fast. The members pushed themselves to the limits again. Dystopia will certainly please every fan of, let’s say, Origin, Suffocation, Visceral Bleeding, Cryptopsy, Despised Icon, Vital Remains and Monstrosity.
