Band : Civet People interested in biology will tell you that a civet is a small carnivorous mammalian with cat-like features (although with a slightly extended and often pointed muzzle, like a fox) and a habitat in Africa and Asia around wooded areas. It is also the bandname taken on by the foursome of lead singer/ guitarist Liza Graves, guitarist/ backing singer Suzi Homewrecker, bassist/ backing singer Jacqui Valentine, and drummer Danni Harrowyn. I've really found almost no info sources (I probably didn't look hard enough, didn't use the approprite channels or such) to tell you more about the band's history, and the only additional data I can give you, really, is that a previous album titled Massacre was released through Disaster Records during 2005. It's that the new album is now on Punk Rock/ Hardcore specialist label Hellcat, a subsidiairy of Epitaph, because the first thing I was reminded of when seeing the album title was a very exhilerating female Metal act called Rock Goddess. Quite like the animal they were named after, the gals in this band are not to be handled without gloves...boy, can they be angry! Their music is a very nice Rock-geared Hardcore with wonderful vocal backings, which highten the sing-along factor even more. Liza's somewhat raucous voice is simply superbly balanced against the finer tuned singing of the two backing singers. Obviously, the gals have some outspoken views about their relations with the other sex, and in some of the songs they take on the sexist behaviour for which they've come to know some of the more hidious examples (not too many, I hope) of the male population surrounding them. But then again, they do also show some more sensitive moments when singing about a love lost, or confirming their youthful exhuberance by pledging eternal friendship towards each other. Ach, female bonding...that's still one of the typical things of the female sex man never got a grasp on! The 13 songs on the album are sure to entertain you for each second of the 35 minutes the album lasts, and you can get a whiff of the grrrls style at myspace.com/civet, where you'll find mp3 files of two tracks off the band's 2005 album, and two more off the new one. If you're taking the time to browse through the blogs, you'll find the girls listen to some truly varied stuff. Just back from a tour with Dropkick Murphys, the Los Angeles based kittens went back on the road for the second part of the Summer touring (until Sept. 18) the US with Zebrahead. I've no idea what's up after that...will the gals be doing a European tour soon, or just continue to tour the US? I've no idea, and if you dó wanna know you'll simply have to check in on their MySpace every now and again. 88/100 Tony. |
