Band: Descending A Gothenburg-inspired band from Greece? It may not be that evident, yet it is the absolute truth in the case of Descending. The modern-sounding and shredding Metal from this band contains influences from both Death Metal and Power / Heavy Metal, yet the core is built around an intense Thrash Metal base, containing the necessary (read: predictable???) and evident Thrash elements: painful screams (and a few more deadly growls and grunts plus an occasional clean voice), groovy guitar breaks, technical riffs, sharp solos and an ultra-heavy rhythm section. Also the production is clean, thanks to the professional assistance of Mystic Prophecy’s R.D. Liapakis. The main influences are bands as Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Soilwork, The Haunted and consorts, yet also Trivium and even Nightrage (not that strange, because guitar player Constantine did play with this formation before) come to mind. And the more Power Metal-influenced elements remind me to bands as, for example, Firewind or Mystic Prophecy. But, even though these bands did clearly influence Descending’s debut album, this Greek formation does succeed, partly, to introduce an own face into the songs. Acceptable material for fans of Swedish-oriented Thrash Metal. 77/100 Ivan Tibos. |
