Band: Sarin The pretty young Belgian formation Sarin, named after a deadly gas and consisting of (ex-) members of, for example, Theudho and Wanhoop, recently recorded and released their first mini-album, which lasts for about twenty five minutes. Opening track “Grotesque Disgrace” opens with a Metallica inspired riff, yet soon it is clear that this band does not stand for Thrash Metal in the vein of this American band. Sarin brings an underground-oriented form of Black Metal with a cold production (a little too ‘flat’, I’m afraid – recorded at the small Dungeon Studio at Oudenaarde, Belgium) and elements from Death Metal. The melodic and atmospheric tracks are mostly slow to mid-tempo, yet a few times the band plays faster parts too. A few times, this band’s music reminds me to Sear Bliss, yet also influences from Scandinavian bands and projects come to mind. And of course there’s a slight touch of ‘Belgian darkness’ to detect too. Overall, the band has a pretty own sound, even though it might not be renewing or refreshing. But it is certain that Sarin will evolve into another great Flemish band and I do look forward to a full length release, hopefully recorded with better equipment. 83/100 Ivan Tibos. |
