Band : Candlemass To tie their fans over in between their previous album and the one that is to appear in the coming year, Doom metal merchants Candlemass decided upon the release of this here 3-track EP, containing the studio tracks “Lucifer Rising”, “White God”, and a re-recorded version of their classic “Demons Gate” (original on the 1986 debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus)…which already makes for a very respectable 18 minutes of listening pleasure…and for an EP, that’s not bad at all! But to make things even more interesting for the fans, so they wouldn’t feel “bought”, the guys (or the label, or both) decided to add a live recording from the band’s appearance in Athens during 2007. The track-list that evening was on the one end concentrated on the band’s older material (from the debut they played both “Solitude” and “Under The Oak”…and from 1987’s Nightfall the guys played “At The Gallow’s End” –which openes the set –and “Samarithan” – which closes the set), and on the other end there was of course the more recent material to promote. From the then recently released King Of The Grey Islands, “Emperor Of Void”, “Devil Seed”, and “Of Stars And Smoke” were performed, and from the preceeding self-titled 2005 comeback album the band brought “Black Dwarf”. With the addition of “Mirror Mirror” (sorry, I’m temporarily at a loss, don’t have the album that appears on originally, nor an Internet connection at the moment of writing down this quick review) this makes for a total of almost 53 ½ minutes of bonus material…definitely making this the longest EP ever (I wonder now, would it also be sold at normal EP price?). No rating, as the live material is somewhat of a “best of” thing, and stuff which is already belonging into my personal History Book Of Doom Metal. Since in the studio material there’s also a re-make, that would leave only the two first songs for rating. Anyways, be sure you’ll be able to find this EP in my year-lists! Tony. |
