Band : Nightwish I’m not sure what are the underlaying reasons for this box set release comprising last year’s Dark Passion Play album (review by yours truly posted 23/09/2007) and the preceeding Amaranth EPs. I mean, the only difference between the old releases (which were all available over here to begin with, even the EPs, which for some mysterious reason our editor-in-chief did not lét us review back then!) is that they are now surrounded by a thick cardboard box! No extra booklet, no bonus tracks, no extras what-so-ever…except for that box! So…why this “Special Deluxe Edition”? Who cares, as it allows me to finally give some attention to the EPs, which are different not only in how they look (the first has a dark background, the second has the brighter one with the flower more to the front), but also in content. See, while both EPs carry the title track, they differ in the fact that the first has 3 bonus tracks, the first being a demo version of the title track sung by bassist Marco Hietala…and then still titled “Reach”. It’s followed by an instrumental, and more orchestral, version of album track “Eva”, and the EP is concluded with the non-album track bonus “While Your Lips Are Still Red” (with Hietala again as lead singer, apparently a leftover from the demo stage of the album). The second EP only has two bonus tracks, the first being the more orchestral and instrumental version of the title track, the second a demo version (again with Hietala singing) of “Eva”! Well, that’s it…if you wanna know how I felt about the full-length, you’ll need to look up the review I did last year. Otherwize, the only reason I can find for this box set release is that possibly the label is trying to entice the true fans out of some hard-earned money, thinking they’re gonna get something special…when they already hàve both the album and EPs!
