Review: CD

Hailing from Belgium , AguynguerraN (what's in a name? - in fact this name is an excerpt from a writing by pope Zachary , Debent Duodecim Sacerdotes ) was formed just before the end of last decennium / millennium. Consisting of members that are / were involved with bands as Enthroned , Iconoclasm or Wapenspraak En Drinkgelag , AguynguerraN did record its debut studio album at the Dungeon Studio with mixing assistance of Enthroned -colleague Phorgath during several months in 2007. Perverting The Nazarene Cult (47 minutes) opens with Anathema Maranatha , an intro that reminds me a lot to soundtracks from Italian or American horror movies from the late seventies, yet as from the second track, the title track, AguynguerraN show its true face. And it isn't a beautiful one! AguynguerraN 's music stands for mostly fast and intense, dark, cold and impressive Black Metal with a modest old school spirit and a thrashy undertone. Perverting The Nazarene Cult certainly isn't a renewing album, because the influences from the Belgian, yet also the Swedish scene are too expressive (think: Setherial or Watain , for example). Yet it cannot be denied that the quality is superb! Both music and lyrics (dealing with an anti-dogmatic ideology, a vision on Christianity that isn't that shiny at all) exhale a ‘pure' and convincing spirit of unholiness and grimness, and believe me: the level of higher mentioned bands gets easily equalled! The only remark may be the sound, which seems to be a little ‘flat' (just a little), yet my overall impression is very positive! The sun did shine whole day, yet this piece gives me a shivering unfelt for years! The album, by the way, does also contain the Nifelheim -cover The Final Slaughter .
