Band : Genghis Tron Album Title : Board Up The House Label : Relapse Distributor : Rough Trade Records Release Date : 25/02/2008 Review : CD Forming four short years ago in Poughkeepsie, New York, Genghis Tron – Mookie Singerman ( vocals), Michael Sochynsky (keyboards), and Hamilton Jordan (guitars) – set out to create something left-of- center , and like their musical tastes, that couldn't be easily pinned down. Genghis Tron began their first substantial touring on the heels of their first demo and subsequent EP Cloak of Love ( Crucial Blast , 2005), gigging with a range of diverse bands from Dan Deacon to Daughters, Yip, Yip to Death From Above 1979, Usaisamonster to Magrudergrind , and everything in between. The writing evolved slowly but morphed into what would become 2006's Kurt Ballou -produced Dead Mountain Mouth , their first full-length album. Genghis Tron's painstaking year of write-and-tour, write-and-tour concluded when they returned to Ballou's God City Studio in the fall to record Board Up The House . (bits and pieces by Relapse -site ) Now that they have found their way to Relapse Records their unique music will be available to a much larger crowd. This, the second album by US band Genghis Tron , is a whirlwind ride through grindcore , ambient, electronica , industrial noise, psychedelia and all manner of strange sounds that give the album a dark and ever shifting sound. Board Up The House maims, kills, strangles, and mutilates the listener with its rapid-fire of grindcore Genghis-ism but it also hypnotizes them in a trance with their angst-ridden elec ( Tron ) ic bleeps, drones and loops. Although the faster material and the mechanized drumprogramming tend to get somewhat repetitive at times, the slower break-beat passages on superb tracks like “Board up the house”, “I won't come back alive” “Ergot” and “Recursion “ help alleviate this potential problem. The album is a bewildering listen as it jumps between styles, with the listener having no clue as to what is about happen. Those metal fans who want the genre to develop and experience new fresh sounds should go check out Genghis Tron right away. 89/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
