Band: Hatchet The Bay Area-sound certainly was a very important and influential direction within the history of Thrash Metal. Bands as Metallica, Testament, Death Angel, Vio-Lence and Exodus are gigantic names and the sound is recognizable yet very accessible too. And what’s more, Bay Area Thrash never disappeared. A pretty young formation, formed at the very beginning of 2005, called Hatched (there’s also a Death Metal band called Hatchet, hailing from Massachusetts), started with the aim to pay tribute to their home town’s unique style. However, it took quite a while to find a steady line-up. Finally, with the addition of the very young bass player Dan Destroyer, they were ready to enter the studio. The debut album, which is called Awaiting Evil, brings a very 80s-alike Bay Area-oriented form of Crossover / Heavy / Power / Speed / Thrash Metal. The songs are very catchy, energetic and pretty varying, and the guitar solos are professionally skilled, that’s a certainty. The riffs and rhythm section are up-tempo and pondering, while the pretty typical vocals fit perfectly to the old school oriented Thrash hymns. Hatchet succeed to inject their music with a refreshing sound and a modern approach, but don’t expect a renewing album. The band does not just copy bands as Testament, Death Angel, (earlier) Slayer, Sanctity, Evile or Megadeth, yet on the other hand it is pretty clear that those names were very influential. If you’re looking for more than acceptable New Wave Of Bay Area Thrash Metal, then Awaiting Evil, which lasts for forty two minutes, is highly recommendable. 80/100 Ivan Tibos. |
