Review: CD

Formed in 1993, Corpus Mortale have been a standard in the European underground Death Metal scene. However, it took more than a decade before the band was signed for the recording and release of a full length. With Lewd Demeanor, the debut, was a bull’s eye hit, yet it took another couple of years before the band started writing and recording new material. A New Species Of Deviant is Corpus Mortale’s second full length release and it goes mainly on in the vein of the debut: slow to mid-tempo yet powerful, groovy oppressing and overwhelming Death Metal with a timeless old school-oriented approach. The combination of, let’s say, Unleashed, Koldborn, Runemagick and Bolt Thrower is more than acceptable, but personally I prefer the band’s debut album, because that one did have a more specific own face. All right, it seems to be extremely difficult to bring something renewing nowadays, but With Lewd Demeanor did and A New Species Of Deviant does not. But this album is a nice one, maybe with more (technical) variation than the former one, and it is highly recommended to fans of general old school Death Metal.
