Band : Scars On Broadway “Scars On Broadway” is the self-titled debut album from the American-Armenian rock band Scars On Broadway. All the music and lyrics come from the brain of Daron Malakian, guitar player in System Of A Down (SOAD), who played all the instruments when recording this album, except for the drums which are played by drummer John Dolmayan, also from System Of A Down. Some of the material has been laying around since years, but was never used in System Of A Down, so with that band being on a hiatus (singer Serj Tankian from System Of A Down released a solo album earlier this year), Daron Malakian saw his chance of releasing some of his other musical ideas. Scars On Broadway is more rock driven and less metal than SOAD. With most of the songs clocking around only three minutes length, the music has become more accessible and melodic, without forgetting the sense of humour and spirit for adventure that we know from these gentlemen. Great characteristic in the sound of Scars On Broadway is the nasal voice of singer/guitar player Daron Malakian who sounds a lot like John Lydon (Sex Pistols, P.I.L.) and the same punk energy as The Sex Pistols can be found back on some songs of Scars On Broadway, no kidding. The highlights of the self-titled album, which contains fifteen songs and has a playing time of 45 minutes, are "Serious", "Exploding / Reloading", my favourite track "Stoner Hate", the second single "World Long Gone", "Kill Each Other / Live Forever", "3005" and the terrific first single "They Say". System Of A Down will be back with a new album at the end of 2009 at the earliest. 80/100 Erik. |
