CD REVIEW Lava

Band : Lava
Album Title : Lava
Label : Sulatron
Distributor : Clearspot
Release Date : 2008
Review : CD.

Lava is a very clever improvised instrumental blend of progressive, experimental and jazzy vibes and 70's kraut flavoured groove that grows on you with each and every playing.

“Pa troattoaren” opens the album and builds slowly into a demented krautrock journey with frenzied organ/synths and a pounding freeroll drum beat that reaches a plateau at the 9 minute mark.  “Det Lyckliga Mongot” has strange, almost out of tune harmonies that are very mantra like. This is a record about spaced-out groove and sound textures. It weaves and meanders all over the place yet sometimes it is completely aimless in its direction. In case you are wondering, the longest track “Lord of Linne” is my personal favourite,an energetic jam with lots of spacey organ, mind boggling guitarparts and impressive buildup.

Of course this will not be everybody's bag, but if you If you fancy a freaky mixed bag of freeform kraut jazz rock, Lava’s self titled debut is recommended and I will look forward to future releases from Dave Schmidt’s Sulatron Records with anticipation.
