Review : CD.

The Shivas are a couple of Vancouver-based youngsters with a sixties psychedelic surf edge to their sound. Their debut album Where Have You Gone To? contains some great music and dazzling guitar tricks. The whole album ebbs and flows, gently guided by Jared’s fragile vocals. The occasional fuzz guitars give the music an appealing floating quality. it's a long album (13 tracks-nearly 1 hr)) that maybe could have been trimmed a bit, but that's a minor complaint. The standout tracks are the wonderfully spaced-out “Sit anywhere”, “Sunny afternoon” with tabla and “Butter sun” with its beautiful waves of morphing guitars that gently wash over the listener.

There’s plenty happening here to feed your head, a very positive and airy album, ideal for long summer evenings. Sure, it ain't the most original LP you'll hear this year, but the performances are enthusiastic, and it's an album we play on a regular basis.
