Review: CD

The history of Dawn Of Winter starts in 1990 with the moniker Cemetery. After the recording of a first demo, and the addition of new members, Cemetery became Dawn Of Winter. Throughout the years, the formation recorded a few more demos, two minis (among which one on vinyl only) and a full length (In The Valley Of Tears, Iron Glory Records, 1998). A compilation-LP saw the light in 2003 (also through guitar player Jörg M. Knittel’s own label Iron Glory). With producer Achim Köhler (My Darkest Hate, Sacred Steel, Sodom, Totenmond, Primal Fear etc) the quartet recorded pretty traditional and conventional Doom Metal. The influences are pretty clear: from Saint Vitus and Pentagram over Trouble and Candlemass to Black Sabbath. Meaning: evident and safe. But the melancholic or quasi-suicidal songs aren’t predictable, almost every single detail exist in perfect symbiosis with each other, and a few creative moments lift the whole up. Other keywords: groovy, rocking, heavy. The Traditional Doom scene is clearly reviving lately (think about splendid recently recorded releases from, for example, Gates Of Slumber, Reino Ermitano or Fall Of The Idols, to name a few) and starts getting over-crowded, yet because of the Dawn Of Winter-members’ skills and strengths, the limited originality is easily forgiven. Next time, however, I’d like to see more that comes from within.

80/100
