Band : Tuvalu Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia, but it also is the name of a very good Finnish female-fronted prog band. The CD starts out with some moody, atmospheric sounds before launching into the slightly Fripp-guitar oriented “Daktaaliavaruus” and quickly betrays the band’s ability to blend melody and prog complexity. The title track is probably the best on the album. Complex, energetic, strong melodies and an obvious influence from The Mars Volta here. Annina Antinranta could easily be one of the best singers from the Finnish progressive rock scene, sounding like Cedric Bixler Zavala..On the picture of their website she also looks like him, very scary indeed. The guitar playing and composition style is just as intense with lots of lovely prog/fusion melodies as well as engaging soundtrack-like atmospheres. There are quiet, haunting and surreal moments that perfectly compliment the loud, chaotic and powerful side of the music. They are not venturing into endless and unnecessary passages only to display their musical skills. The production helps bring out the textures of the excellent instrumentation and wonderful, but very strong vocals of Annina (love the name) Viimeiset hetket ovat käsillä! will be well worth a try if you like your progressive rock dark, complex and dynamic. .File in between The Mars Volta, King Crimson and Viima. 86/100 Cosmicmasseur |
