Band : That Was Something Album Title : Bears Label : Oort Records Europe Distributor : Goodlife Distribution Release Date : 03/11/2008 Release : CD “Bears” is already the fifth release in five years of the American indie band That Was Something but it’s their first release for Oort Records. Those six guys from Detroit sounds a bit cuddly as the artwork suggests and while they know how to write some slick pop rock songs you get soon bored halfway through this album. It was difficult to distinguishing separate songs from then on. All of the songs have nice guitar sounds and keyboard effects with hooky vocals but they lack that extra bit of zing to make them stand out in a genre that’s already very crowded. And you can hear that this band hasn’t grown any further than when they started as a school band. It’s nice to portray yourself as a collective effort with every member contributing to the songs but at this moment it all sounds like a cover band bringing influences from Jimmy Eat World, The Cure to New Found Glory alive. Although That Was Something shows that they can play well influenced music, it’s getting time they produce their won sound with a solid structure to stand up for their own future. 65/100 Guido Claes. |
