Band : Death Before Sunrise Although their bandname suggests one may have to do with some Melodic Metal-Metalcore act [actually, there doés exist a 5-piece American, Bloomington (Illinois) based, Hardcore/ Metalcore act by that name, who’ve been around since the Summer of ’03 and have a demo out…and there’s also a somewhat better known act around using the bandname Dead By Sunrise], Cardiff (Wales, UK) based quartet (whose members all come from Llantwit Major, also in the South of Wales) come from another line of music. Formerly known as A Boy Called Hate, its original members were brought together in early 2008 by a common love for Metallica. However, when the band started playing gigs the songs they played were covers by the likes of Green Day, Blink 182 and The Atari’s (quite a change from Metallica, wouldn’t you agree?). Only after having done those first gigs did they start writing their own stuff (the sound of which again differed), 3 songs of which they recorded for a 3-track demo (I regret to say I have no intel as to when that was released). Somewhere along the line, singer/ guitarist Richard Fisher and lead guitarist Rhys Edwards exchanged their old rhythm section for bassist David Lawson and drummer Aled Edwards (hum…related, I wonder?)…and by December 2008 they’d come to the point that they wanted to change their bandname. They then started preparing to record a new 8-track outing, not forgetting to promote themselves through a continuous presence in South Wales’ venues. Recording eventually took place in mid April ’08 (again no intel of where, I dó know they were done by one Todd Campbell, though), and then sent out a 2-track promo (containing the songs “Hundred Questions, Thousand Answers” and “Will There Be A Moment”) which got them some mixed but on the whole positive reviews. Along the way, they signed to Casket/ Copro, and shared stages with the likes of Resonate, Fights And Fires, Nothing New (say, ain’t that all Lockjaw acts?), and Death Quit Dancing. Stylisticaly, you might say the band mixes elements from Pop Punk and Power Rock with a bit of Screamo (lead vocals mainly of a clean and very melodic, sing-along nature, there’s a couple of backing screams occasionally), and gives it an additional metallic flavouring. Comparisons which have been thrown into the sound-alike pot by reviewers of the promo include New Found Glory, Avenged Sevenfold, You Me At Six…and Soundgarden…! Ah? Euhm…check it out for yourselves at myspace.com/deathbeforesunriseband, where the guys posted 3 of the songs. Personally, I’ve grown somewhat beyond this kind of what I’d like to call “somewhat commercial” type of music, which doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate it on condition of not having to listen to it over and over again! Two turns in the cd-player, or half an hour’s gig prior to an other-styled act, will do me fine, thank you! But of course you’re free to go completely nuts by this band’s music…and depending on your age, be peer-presured! As I said before, I’ve grown beyond that…actually, I’ve always known myself to go agàinst my peers, seeking out new music before it became popularized by the music business…but that’s a completely different story altogether, and none of your business besides (sorry if that sound a bit harsh, it is of no relevance to yourself ór the music played by this band)! 80/100 Tony. |
