Review : CD

This Italian/Dutch band have never recorded two albums that sound alike, each has its own mood and its own sound peculiarities. With their new 2009 album Third Disaster it seems that Michele Rossiello, bass, vocal Angelo Pantaleo, drums, vocal Daniele Sindaco, guitar Laurence O’Toole, vocal, guitar Fabio Mongelli, acoustic and electric guitar, farfisa, vocal abandon the space overload of their previous release Wall Of Water Behind Me to replace it with short grind-to-the-bone compositions. Their material is just such a passionate flow of ideas that gel with a twisted metallic Stooges-groove that never seems to let up. Just check out numbers like “Secret way to the valley”, “You” with fantastic never-ending screaming lead guitar solos, the Electric Prunes-like “Here’s where I belong” and the unpredictable Hendrix-ian jam “Kap-e-tone” and you'll see the dynamic diversity these Atomic Workers have to offer. The music is astonishingly catchy, both guitar- and vocal-wise, with lots and lots of space sound- and sample-inducing parts. The guitarists screech their way into six-string bliss on every track. While not entirely over-the-top, it's pretty clear to me that restraint wasn't necessarily the first thing these cohorts in guitar soloing concerned themselves with upon waking up each day.

I hope to catch the band quite soon…
