Band : Masters Of Reality Without a doubt, Pine is one of the most highly anticipated (desert) rock releases of 2009. Masters Of Reality started out as one of the first retro stoner riff rock bands in the 80's. The band has inspired some of the best stoner bands we know today – Kyuss for example… After five years Masters Of Reality have returned to the fold with their first new album since their acoustic Give Us Barabbas. After living with this album I must conclude - all in all, the entire album is a minor setback for Chris Goss and John Leamy, the two main composers for this album. The disc starts out well enough, moving through a few strong songs. “King Richard tlh” sizzles, rocking out without apology, as does the guitar grinder "Absinthe jim and me”. “Allways”, “The whore of new orleans” and “Up in it” are another fine examples of a great blend of sneering riffs, driving rhythms and the harmonies on the Floyd/ Zeppelin/ Bowie-like great choruses make them outstanding tracks. But songs like “Worm in the silk” and “Testify” are build on mediocre riffs and are nowhere cohesive in its entirety. The tiring fusion space jam “Alfalfa” and the lame electronic song “Johnny’s song” are worse than a MOR’s worst case scenario. The album lacks real quality songs and there is no flow in the songs from start to finish. When you re-evaluate this record in its entirety the major problem is that the few okay songs is overshadowed by an overweight of bad songs. More boring yawns than enticing memorable moments, and what a shame it is too. 80/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
