Band : Spiritus Mortis If you were to browse the shelves of your very favorite CD shop, there's a good chance that Spiritus Mortis would not jump out at you for any particular reason. Perhaps if you know that former Reverend Bizarre vocalist Sir Albert Witchfinder or simply Sami Hynninen is singing in Spiritus Mortis at the moment, you'd know to pause at this strange, black skull cover, design by Sami himself. However, if you knew nothing of that connection, you may very well just pass on to the next CD on the shelf. More focused and better produced than their previous albums, The God Behind The God is a 8-song ride into the world and visions of this Finnish five-piece.Naturally, those familiar with Reverend Bizarre will immediately notice the similarities, most obviously the vocals. The up-tempo crackers ”Man of steel” and “Perpetual motion” are a rush of power metal adrenaline throughout its entire duration. “Death bride”, “Curved horizon” and “The god behind the god” are moody and epicful but warm and inviting. The melodies are slightly obscured, but still fairly powerful throughout, as Sami is a capable frontman for this style of music. The playing is excellent, and the production lets them all shine through. Song structures are quite simple, but there are plenty of tempo changes to keep things interesting, and the drumming is solid and powerful at every speed. Cool riffs, too, even if they're nothing fancy. 87/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
