Review : CD

This release marks the third in Syrach’s sixteen year long career. Having formed in Bergen (Norway) in 1993, Syrach have been plugging away in the Norwegian underground ever since

Atmospheric doom death metal from this quartet on this 6-song outing, as the majority of the music on Syrach’s A Dark Burial lies buried under a powerful onslaught of gravel vocals and a treacherous stomp of down-tuned beats. With the death-growl vocal styling of singer Kenneth leading the assault of doom/death on numbers like “Curse the souls”, “A mourner’s kiss” and “In darkness I sigh” the music on A Dark Burial is quite satisfactory but as time goes on the music becomes monotonous and leaves the listener looking for something else to throw on. Indeed, this album took some time to grow on me, I hardly liked it at all at first, but after a few more listens, I've grown to like this cd quite a bit, and suggest it to all who consider themselves a fan of Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Candlemass,…in the nineties that is.
