Band : Ink Ink comfortably wraps itself in the sounds of the Led Zeppelin-III/Pearl Jam-Ten/Monster Magnet-Monolothic Baby-era. Diary is diverse and uniformly good, spanning funk, hard–edged riff–rock, grunge and sweetly mushy a little bit cheesish balladry without any hint of filler. The band is neither too aggressive nor too light, but Greece heavy rock trio Ink play it too safe and Diary doesn't cover any new ground, but still it's a well played record. The album opens with an up-tempo tune and then the listener is totally caught by surprise. “Easy day” sounds like a minor US hit along with “Welcome”. Both songs are well structured and have great hooks. Unfortunately the album looses pace and destroys the flow of the record, since the record has trouble getting back in gear. A couple of indifferent songs like “Heart pills” and “The drug on years” drag down the overall impression. Luckily the album ends on a high note with the acoustic driven “Sunday weeping”. The stripped down arrangement suits the band and understates that these are good songwriters. Chris has a good mainstream voice. It could have been refreshing to hear his vocal take on one or two songs to keep it rawer. There is some tasty solo work, but you still wish that the guitarsolos were more in-your-face and noticeable on the record. Diary is far from convincing, but still an acceptable release. 79/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
