NY Brooklyn Tombs blend elements of black metal with postrock, sludge, doom and hardcore giving the listener something to think about on their first full-length release with first grade metal label Relapse Records (such varied artists as High on Fire, Zombi, 16, Burst, Halo, Alchemist, Origin, Minsk,…) .

This trio wickedly pound out a steady stream of savage riffs, crushing rhythms, and machine-gun fire like drums on tracks such as the time-released mayhem of “Beneath the toxic jungle” and the hellacious sprawling beast that is “Seven stars the angel of death”. The band is amazingly proficient at their instruments and where black metal sometimes tends to get muddy, the production allows each instrument to blast through. “Gossamer” is a barnburner of an opener as it rages out of the speakers with, yes, an unrelenting assault. There is plenty of pummeling going on, but there are some downright mammoth songs on this disc as well. My personal favorite, “The divide”  is ground out by one of best riffs on the album, the sludge riffing on “The divide”  is reminiscent of High On Fire-style groove. Guitarist Mike Hill spits and howls his anger out all over this record and the blazing soundtrack Winter Hours behind him is a perfect companion.

This is a hard album to judge, since there are so many different elements and no real comparison to lean against and may not appeal to everyone but myself, I can't wait for the next ride. For fans of Neurosis, High on Fire, Lair of the Minotaur and people who liked the latest record of Wolves In The Throneroom, go check this out.
