Following a tour with Todd Youth the bandmates of Shock Rock/ Horror Metal act Wednesday 13 found themselves discussing the bands they grew up with…and as they kinda felt a need to take a break from W13’s specific brand of theatrical music, they decided to put together a band with influences coming from the Rock ‘n’ Roll sounds of Kiss, The Dead Boys, The New York Dolls, The Stooges, and other in-your-face Hard Rock acts! Just as soon done as said, the guys had quickly written together a bunch of songs which they took out to the Californian clubs and venues, and before too long they were huddled together in a studio with Bullets And Octane bassist Brent Clawson as producer (he’s done the same before for his own band, Guttermouth, and The Knives) to record the 11 songs for their debut full-length album.

What with Jason Poole aka Wednesday being the lead singer, there is of course sóme recognition factor between the two bands (even if the lyrical content is quite different), but Gunfire 76’s music is indeed more geared towards the Rock side of things, with the track “Tell You Like It Is” as the most outspoken Rock ‘n’ Roll song in the bunch. The added saxophone in “Back To the Gutter” also helps in gearing the music in the right direction. For the most part the other songs…played by a bunch of musicians which hàve, after all, gotten used to play a certain kind of music over the course of these last six years…can’t quite completely shake off a slightly metallic tinge, but also have some elements of Glam. If this were the ‘80s I’d call it “Heavy” Rock, you know! Somehow I’ve got a feeling these songs were written with quite a pace, and the calmer melodies of album closer “Get Me Through The Night” partly remind me of a song titled “Is It True”….I forgot whom that is from originally (I think they were a Dutch band).

Check out the band’s music at myspace.com/gunfire76, where the band posted every song on the album (full-length version) baring exactly that album closer. People living in the UK can go out to see the band play during their December tour (between the 1st and 12th) with Bullets And Octane, which will be the closing of the year for them. In January G76 heads out for a tour which is apparently concentrated to the East Coast of the US, and around mid-February the band (but I ain’t sure in which incarnation…you know, as either W13 or G76) will be playing a couple of shows in Australia. Meanwhile, I’m left with the task of rating this, and that’s difficult enough, because while every song is composed and performed with the usual flair for details to which we’re accustomed with W13 albums, I personally got a feeling of listening to quite average songs. Perhaps the album needs more listening sessions than the 4 or 5 I gave it?

80/100
