Review : CD

Created by the super evil demons from outer space who dwell in the cosmic realm comes a rather bizarre recording. Surprisingly, this comes to us through Nasoni, a Berlin-based label that has been distributing and releasing some fantastic psychedelic, stoner and kraut rock. I have to admit I don’t get it and I am not impressed by Black Zodiac. This album just never takes off to explore the cosmos as the (mis)guided promotional workup would suggest. Their music is a meshy, spacey mix of Hawkwind, Voi Vod, Merzbow, Tekton Motor Corporation, Fear Factory and Yob. These elements do not particularly go together very well and make for a miserable listening experience. The whole album has a very amateurish feel to it and it doesn't help that the production is very industrial, distorted and metallic. Though the songs have a very heavy and mostly slow, overpowering hypnotic feeling, there's quite a few tracks that got rather annoying, for instance “Cosmic Penetration” (I, II and III)” which seem to have no real direction other than showcasing some bizarre warped guitar noises. A pretty original sound, but one that I think will have a hard time finding an audience.

60/100
