Band: Epica The so-called ‘female-fronted Metal’ scene is very popular all over the world, yet one of the leading countries certainly are The Netherlands. Epica is such a band, but they can’t be compared to any other. ‘Female fronted Metal’ is incorrect, because the band has an own sound and the vocals aren’t just female. Simone Simons has a classical experienced voice, yet she uses it in a strong and unique way. Besides, also grunts and harmonious choirs are part of the whole. The music is extremely bombastic and operatic, yet with a wide spectrum, from neo-symphonic and classical to intense and heavy. The perfect balance between gothic orchestrations and firm Metal elements has clearly been well-thought deeply and the majestic, mythical and magisterial atmospheres are superb. Besides, the sound (Sasha Paeth - think Rhapsody, After Forever, Avantasia, Running Wild, Aina amongst many others) is above average with its fullness and overpowering production. As a matter of fact, every single track is a beautiful yet obscure piece of Metal Opera, brought with emotions, crafts(wo)manship and confidence. Just listen, just enjoy… Fairytales might be true… Duration: seventy five minutes. 87/100 Ivan Tibos. |
