Band : Long Distrance Calling It's been a long time since I heard a instrumental post rock album that made an immediate impression. Most post rock albums take a long time to grow on me. Not Long Distance Calling’s Avoid The Light. I was taken by surprise, especially since I'd never heard of these Germans prior to this occasion. LDC have actually been around for awhile and already have produced a number of independent releases. The epic sweep of nearly every track envelopes the listener into swirling maelstroms of emotions. The guitars are solid, the leads expressive. The rhythm of the drums provide the CD's much-needed forward momentum while keyboards and synthesizers are used to perfect measure. The band employs various technical elements and creative songwriting to make their songs stand out from the morass that passes for post rock these days. I am fond of the production, too, particularly on the drums because they catch all the little echoes and nuances in a sound that’s almost like being in the same room hearing them be played. While not terribly original ( a mix of My Sleeping Karma, Explosions In The Sky and Daturah) Avoid The Light is a good listen to my ears. This CD is the sound of a confident band that has a strong vision for their music and does everything in their power to achieve that vision. The bottom-line is that Avoid The Light is a pleasant surprise and will likely end up being one of the better surprises of 2009. 91/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
