Review : CD

I got this time a cd from a mellow prog rock act from Israel, based in Berlin with similarities to artists like Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Riverside and Hypnos69.

Once I started to listen to this album, I could tell there was some talent here. While not always groundbreaking or creative, the tracks on Possibly Not are memorable and very melodious. The vocal melodies are wonderful featuring some great harmony There are tendencies to jam a little as well as softer moments. The band always plays as a unit, never allowing the solos to become grandiose or detract from the song as a whole. The record flows very well and the variety between the songs keeps it from ever becoming a chore to listen to. Despite all the excellent moments on Possibly Not, one also gets the distinct impression this is a band in progress and should only get better from this point on.

With the expressive, passionate singing and the Wilson/Gilmour-like guitarwork, Realeaf establishes its own personality and succeeds on its own merits. The songwriting are consistently strong, with beautiful tracks including the upbeat, instantly catchy instrumental “”Floating underground” the inward, swirling intensity of “Giant bus in the sky” the emotional “Everything’s going south” . The last song “Possibly not” is another melancholic builder with huge vocal melodies, guitar hooks that stick in your ears, and with outstanding performance with lots of, lots of feeling.

And given that this CD is from 2007, hopefully Realeaf have something new in the works. Overall, The CD production is very thin and lacks a bit of punch in the sound, but nevertheless, quite an excellent and surprising debut!
