Formed in the latter part of 2007, Italian (the members are from Bologna and Mestre, near Venetia) band 400Colpi (the bandname míght come from the 1959 French movie Les Quatrecent Coups, the first by movie maker François Truffaut, and a film dedicated to the memory of André Bazin, famous movie critic and theorist whom died in paris one day after shooting of he movie began) immediately set about recording their self-titled 3-track demo in October of that same year!

After a couple of changes in early 2008 (a new drummer, an additional guitarist, and additional singer) the current line-up of vocalists Tommaso Dal Maschio & Sebastiano Busato, guitarists Matteo Galvan & Michele Mazzanti, bassist Davide Ronchin, and drummer Paolo Parravicini ensued. This sextet at first secluded itself in the rehearsal room, and played its debut live gig at the Rise Fest event, headlined by non other than Death By Stereo! Somehow Chorus Of One was made aware of the band, and swifty offered the band a recording deal.

Rehearsing like mad, he band eventualy entered Vicenza’s Hate Studio in January 2009 to record the 10 tracks (every one the band’s own) which were to be the make-up of this debut album! Stylistically, the band may fool the listener somewhat with the slightly Progressive intro (wouldn’t yoù think about the possibility of an Iron Maiden clone…or at least a Heavy Metal act? of album opening track “Kane” (another reference to the cinamatic world, namely to Orson Welles’ classic movie Citizen Kane), but once the raging singers open their mouths you’re swiftly put in your place, the guys screaming their heads off with heartfelt (but never Emo-tional) socio-politically flavoured lyrics, brought in their native language. Although the overall flavour of the music itself is up-tempo Hardcore in the first place, there’s an additional Metal seasoning with that pinch of Progressive. Aggressive overall, the band nevertheless always incorporates a nice melodic feel to their tunes. In their own words, 400Colpi play “…a raging blend of Thrash Metal fuelled Hardcore, played fast, played loud with words from the heart expressed in Italian furious vocals. The best Metal/ HC record of the last decade!…”.

Well, I don’t feel the Thrash touch per say…in my opinion there isn’t really sufficient “hacking” in the guitar play to justity calling the Metal component of the band’s music that way. And as far as “Best Metal/ HC albums of the last decade” goes, I’m sure there will be people, possibly a lot even, who’ll feel differently (it’s all a matter of opinion and individual taste, isn’t it?), but one thing is for sure: those who thought the Italian scene was dead and buried better think again…or rather, listen to the album! Start by surfing to myspace.com/400colpi…the two lone tracks posted there are sufficient material to be convinced of the qualities of this band, and the fact that Italian Hardcore (a scene I’ve always been somewhat of a fan of) is still well and vivaciously alive!

90/100
