Band: Tardy Brothers John and Donald Tardy started their musical career in 1984, when they formed the band Executioner. This band later became Xecutioner, and in 1989, the moniker definitively changed into the current one, which is much better known: Obituary. Recently, the brothers decided to start a side-project, to express and canalise their ideas that aren’t quite right for their main band. With the assistance of new Obituary-colleague Ralph Santolla (ex-Iced Earth, ex-Death, ex-Deicide, Millenium etc) and ‘old’ (original) Executioner-colleague Jerry Tidwell, the duo recorded Bloodline (oh, that’s so nice, even the title reveals their genetic brothership), which lasts for almost forty minutes. Bloodline is clearly a Tardy-product. Of course, John’s vocals are so characterising. Like in Obituary’s case, he grunts and growls with a deepest tone of guttural torture. Also musically the basic comparisons to Obituary are clear, but at the same time, this material sounds different from the ‘core’ of Obituary’s Death Metal. First of all, the tracks are groovier and more up-tempo. Most tracks have a ‘rocking’ rhythm, and also several riffs and solos breathe a Hard Rock-inspired approach (e.g. Deep Down). Besides, some Classical Metal-elements show another side from John and Donald (and their crew, of course) we didn’t know yet. Indeed, this material lays closer to ‘(traditional) Metal’ than ‘Death Metal’, but still it will be adored by every Obituary-fan. 85/100 Ivan Tibos. |
