Review : CD

Not sure if they're a hardcore, post or sludge metal band, The Atlas Moth decides to be all three at once with their 2009 release A Glorified Piece Of Blue Sky. Musically the disc is complex full. The guitars chop, thrash and wail. The bass and drums lay down an amazing bottom end with the vocals providing a backwash of anger. The Atlas Moth sounds as if they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and must create angry bulldozing music for catharsis.

This enigmatic quintet known as The Atlas Moth have already a cult following in hometown Chicago and for good reason, as the band's distinct wall of sound is built upon the foundations of claustrophobic groove rock with traces of filthy bluesy guitar sections rearing its ugly head throughout. Spanning eight tracks and running for 50 minutes, fans of hardcore post sludge mongers like The Ocean, Taint, Rwake, Minsk, Unearthly Trance and the like will become enthralled with this outfit's mammoth output.

85/100
