Band: Axis Powers The second (or is it the third one in mean time?) wave of Swedish old school Death Metal did reach its peak years ago, yet still many bands seem to succeed to record material worth listening to (and worth buying, of course). The magisterial sound bands as Carnage, Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, Edge Of Sanity stood for (over) twenty years ago, has still been maintained by both older and younger bands with both misery and glory. One of these glorious bands undoubtedly are Axis Powers, formed at the end of last century. This newest epos, called Marching Towards Destruction, may be one of these highlights this year. The quality of the album is superb, going for both compositions / performance and sound. The latter is rough, heavy and right-in-your-(ugly)-face, flavouring the whole with a taste of putrefied morbidity and conquering war-lust. And even though this Swedish old school approach lacks of originality, it does certainly not denigrate the superior quality. The members’ skills are experienced, that’s for sure -the members are / were also involved with, for example, the great Black / Thrash / Death-formation Suicidal Winds- and every single composition is well-thought and filled with ingenious ideas and a nice equilibrium between pounding brutality and archaic pride. 87/100 Ivan Tibos. |
