Review : CD

Filled with growling riffs, disturbing claustrophobic atmospheres and disheartened and clear vocals, this German outfit sets a very gloomy tone as their second sinister musical creation oozes throughout the speakers. There are 7 tracks herein, and 70 minutes total running time, so you know you're going to get some epically lengthy songs here. Fortunately, because the band likes to boil rather than to simmer, this works to their advantage. The single-note melody lines are often either harmonized or have countermelodies under them, which keeps the music interesting most of the time. Tempos are slowed down the point of excruciating heaviness; every note hanging for what seems like an heroic eternity, The Divinity Of Oceans is a record of monstrous weight and considerable musical content that is very likely to be worth your time, though 70 minutes is a lot to take in one sitting, and I find it a little bit of a struggle as an album, especially with these promotional bullshit voiceovers, but it does have some great tracks and this cd is perhaps the most bludgeoning heavy release I will hear this year. If you're looking for speed or head-banging material, you're not looking for Ahab. If you're looking for atmosphere and mystic depth, this is the CD for you.
