Review : CD

Three years may have passed since the last studio offering from Mastodon but it can hardly be said that the Atlanta rockers have laid low in that stretch. They played their asses off on tour with Tool, Slayer, Neurosis,... The culmination of three years worth of writing, recording and especially touring, Mastodon release not only the best album to date but also a more mature and focused CD called Crack The Skye. The four-piece seemed to have spent a lot of time and effort perfecting this CD, which has been produced exceptionally well by Brendan O’ Brien.

They have progressed musically, as well as both vocally and lyrically over the few cds they have on the market. If you have heard the others, you will understand what I mean. With tracks like the videoclip “Oblivian”, “The Czar”, the 13 minute King Crimson-esque “The last baron” and the brilliant “Crack the skye” with it's eerie synthesiser intro that starts off probably the best track on the CD. Mastodon open the pandora box to crack the skye inside everyone. Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, Troy Sanders & Brann Dailor have suppressed themselves to that higher level, without no matter of doubt this is a CD that will be played again, again and again and with every listen you seem to pick up something else out of the wonderful tunes that fill the room. It also is a CD that would get great benefit from a good sound system.

Back after an unusually long break for them, Crack The Skye, Mastodon’s fourth album into their almost ten year-old career is an incredible work and releases the full onslaught of innovative energy that has built up throughout the years of hard work and enjoyment of expression.
