Band : Spirits Of The Dead It’s kind of like if you were to cross The Doors, Ache, Pink Floyd, Amon Duul II and King Crimson, with fellow Scandinavian contemporaries such as Anekdoten, Dead Man and Witchcraft and a little bit of the dark riff structure of Black Sabbath, making for an extremely strong rush of heavy psych/folk rock. Vocalist Ragnar has a very good clear voice, but it really is the music that shines here, particularly the guitars. The solos by Ole here are often played with a great deal of passion, At eight minutes “White lady/black rave” gives a glimpse of the psych rock and gloom sound the band will explore throughout the record, and leaves the listener wanting more. “The waves of our ocean” and “Fields of gold” muscle their way into your mind, even the ghostly ooohs are kind of cool. The title track is both a fascinating and very cool suite of music that never becomes boring. There is constant movement, even during the folkier, moody sections. “Traveller in time” , “Red” and “My wild dream” are other memorable pieces, with nicely chiming guitar playing contrast to the laid-back rhythm and Ragnar’s soothing, melodic vocals. Lots of guitar solos abound, too, but never to the point of excess. Spirits Of The Dead is a warm and open album, full of great textures, great musicianship, and a depth of feeling that comes through every note. 93/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
