Band : Melon Melon are difficult to describe, which should immediately alert you that this is an exciting band. This review may seem somewhat dated, as this release has been available since April. Never Eat On An Empty Stomach is rough, exploding guitar rock that blasts you to the other side of the room. Surreal lyrics, crushing, noisy and inventive melodies, it's one of those few albums that can actually be classified as an "experience". Songs as “Homesick moth”, “Dr Pons”, “Surreal mannequin”, the spacey jam “Nowhere” and the incredible instrumental "The shiny beast” sound wicked and easily urge people to give their their full length debut multiple listens. They’ve released two EPs Drink of the Gods and Mirage (see review 23/02/2008) before. You know what they say : you can never keep a good band down. Indeed they keep it coming with an attack that has some basis in Janes Addiction, Mind Over Four, Tool, The Melvins, Ween, Clutch and Faith No More. Yet they take those influences and twist them in with a massive spinning array of charged-up blues, bouncing funk, grinding guitars and deep pounding beats. They don’t really give you time to catch your breath as the tracks are rather short (3-4m)and too the point because they don’t waste time on unnecessary build-up. To a certain degreeNever Eat On An Empty Stomachoften seems as though more could be added to the music, but that might defeat the intention of their music. For the most part, however, the impressive musicianship and their singular and dynamic vocal style will hold your attention. Over time, I suspect that we'll only expect better and better music from this Delaware quartet. 90/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
