Band : Daily Bread “Indie / Electric / Garage”, is what it says on top of this Leewarden based Ducth band’s MySpace page. Then they start their biography on that same page with the words : “They play ‘SEXY GARAGE DANCE’ according to their own description. Freesonicaput it this way: ‘See it as an exhilerating combination of the raw energy of ‘60s Garage Rock, the recalcitrant attitude of the Dutch Indie scene, and Electro grooves’. So why is it Sexy?…well we are sery, aren’t we?” The latter point is a matter of personal taste and sexual inclination, but fact is that this trio (consisting of singer/ keyboard & noisebox player Kimberley, drum & drumpad player/ backing singer Stefan Stoer, and (fuzz) bass player/ backing vocalist Chris Mulder produce a highly attracting music which is nicely described with the words above! Following the demise of the Britpop band they were playing in, the boys took the decision to pursue a completely different musical approach. They knew Kimberley (who’s from the same village and frequents the same bars as they do) wrote a lot of poetry, and found that a good basis to start a band on. The first songs were written and rehearsed, but the sound of just drums ‘n’ bass was a bit bare, so in came the Philcordiaorgan…and the essence of Daily Bread was born! Date : somewhere in late 2007. On the strength of an early demo, the band was selected to participate in the De Kleine Prijs Van Friesland competition, which they won in May 2008, and from that moment on things really started moving! The band recorded a new demo, and were invited to join the Poprondeand Freesonicaprojects. By then, the band had developed a stage presence with the drummer up front in the middle, the others nice & closely huddled around him, playing vintage instruments (the ‘60s drums being played with sticks and maracas) and amplifiers, home-made pedal effects, and singing through telephones. So then the band was invited to participate in the Grote Prijs Van Nederland competition, and invitation which the initially accepted, then rejected when it turned out the band would not be able in their specific stage pose at the Wilhemina Pakhuis venue in Amsterdam, where the competition was to take place! Of course some people in the music business argued that such is not a very professional attitude, but the band insists on wanting to do things their own way…and thus show the stong internal bond they have! The “attitude” pays off, as several record labels start contacting the band with interesting deals. Eventually, the band sign with Excelsior in January of this year! A week later, they play at the prestigious Noorderslagfestival to raving reviews in the media. Big (Summer) festivals start showing their interest in the band, and while invitations start coming in, the band also starts playing in the bigger Dutch venues, and is invited onto TV for the highly popular De Wereld Draait Door show. During June, DB plays Scotland’s GoNorthand Rocknessfestivals, and Switzerland’s Paleofestival. Push comes to shove, DB hàs found itself a unique niche to work from. Kimberley’s lyrics are occasionally naughty and sexual, which is certainly another attraction point! Oh well, just listen to the three songs posted at myspace.com/dailybreadband, and you’ll understand what I could only describe in generalisations which wouldn’t even come close to what’s on offer here! 88/100 Tony. |
