Band : Echoterra I wasn't really taken aback by this release. Musicwise it's not too bad, although at some points it sounds as if it's a piece of classical baroque music, played on modern and electrical instruments, but what really puts me off are the vocals. Besides the vocals the production is also a bit muffled. Compared to other bands in this genre, Echoterra lacks something sparkling, even if all songs sound very solid. To come back to the vocals, the female singer, Suvi Virtanen, who formerly worked as part of Therion's live choir, can surely sing, but as a fronting vocalist she's as far as I'm concerned not capable enough, and lacks variety in her style of singing. A thumb's up though for the keyboards, even with the muffled production you can hear that this guy is a top notch musician. This might please Therion fans, but sadly I'm not that into this kind of symphonic "opera" metal. 50/100 Erik Morren. |
