Band : While Heaven Wept Once again, here's another band that I have constantly heard of, but never had the opportunity to get a chance to listen to their work. Now, I have listened to their newest and it's more than quite impressive. While not sounding entirely like any other particular band, While Heaven Wept have the sound that does appeal to fans of power-, doom- or classic metal. Over sixteen minutes in length, “The furthest shore” works the listener over with sweeping transformations ranging from lengthy passages of instrumentation to crushing sections. “Living sepulchre” and “Vessel” take a turn for the heavier with meatier licks and a thicker rhythm section that have loads of rage and muscle to them and show a remarkable wealth of compositive ideas. The title track offers plenty of progressive elements, but it's serene and not as direct and in your face as the three previous tracks. Rain Irving has a strong high soaring voice that often reminds me of Tom Mallicoat (Lethal) and John Arch (Fates Warning.) Their songs vary from epic to anthem-laden to just plain proggy. All of this seems to be accomplished effortlessly and skilfully; The changes in direction and mood are really great and not overused or forced. Quite simply, this is superb music, showing a great amount of work and talent, resulting in a truly rewarding album. All in all, While Heaven Wept have delivered one of the best metal records I've heard so far in 2009. This is a stunning disc, start to finish.. Anyone who likes metal with substance whether it be Fates Warning, Candlemass, Heir Apparent, Solitude Aeturnus, Rush,… and other such bands will never regret purchasing While Heaven Wept’s Vast Oceans Lachrymose; 95/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
