Band : New Keepers Of The Water Towers Upon my initial listen to this Swedish threesome, my first instinct was to dislike this effort immensely. But during the duration of Chronicles, New Keepers Of The Water Towers quickly won me over and nursed me past my reservations. Rather, New Keepers Of The Water Towers is in general ballpark of Down meets Half Man meets Hammerhead meets Fugazi meets Cavity or somesuch comparison. Their main strength is in their strong sense of a good riff and guitarwork. In fact, that's the main reason to listen to this one hour album. The singing certainly doesn't detract from the overall musical picture, fortunately. The songs range all over the place, from uptempo blitzfests to acoustic pieces. The disc has a couple very short instrumental pieces on it making room for some longer tracks. And there are a couple good tunes on here that do stand out. “The strafing lobster” is nuts, fast and addictive as the Mexican flu and some of the interplay between the guitars and screaming/clear vocals work fairly well, the High On Fire-like “Pursuit of yeti” with immense slaughterwork of rhythm section and guitarists and “The Knowledgeable Kangaroo” with Floyd/Melvins bizarreness. In fact, Cronicles is a worthwhile purchase for anyone who truly delves into heavy sludge rock with a Amp/Reptile or SST under/overtone. 90/100 Cosmicmaseur. |
