CD REVIEW Mortification

Band: Mortification
Title: Live Humanitarian
Label: Nuclear Blast
Distribution: PIAS
Release date: December 2008
Review: DVD

Mortification may be one of Australia’s best known bands within the extreme Metal scene. This project of Steve Rowe is known for its Christian belief, which isn’t that uncommon anymore nowadays. Yet important might be that Mortification were one of the first bands in Metal’s history that combined harsh music with a pro-Christian attitude (+ lyrics).
Live Humanitarian is a double-DVD with almost three hours of material. The first disc brings the live registration of a concert in Perth, Australia, which could be considered a warming-up show for the fans before the ‘real’ tour started. For about eighty five minutes, Steve Rowe (b, v, production), Mick Jelinic (g) and Damien Percy (d) bring old and newer material with a pretty acceptable (nothing more, nothing less) quality. The latter, by the way, goes for both sound and visuals. The performance is perfect, I mean that this trio knows how to handle its instruments like it should be.
Disc two brings some bonus material, among which the EnVision EvAngelene movie / clip, combining Christian propaganda with heavy music. The disc also features pictures from Steve’s life (with wife, child and studio), Steve’s participation on some Paralympics’ (?) throwing tournament, and highlights from the European part of the Live Humanitarian Tour.
