Review : CD

Bigelf is one of those bands that are a landmark. With the release of their third full length Cheat The Gallows it should put them on the doorstep of a higher power, dealing out 10-tracks of blood curdling and at times, chillingly mesmerizing music.

The opening track “Gravest show on earth”  is an outstanding song which shows off the musicianship in Bigelf. Damon Fox has to be one of those vocalists that so many will love. He has the presence that will electrify an audience and bring you to your feet. What I like about this release is that the lyrics are not monotonous and repetitive. These tracks actually tell a story and hold your attention. “Blackball” is a magical mystery chocked full of twists and turns from a grandiose feel to seventies-rock, prog and Ozzy-like vocals. The single “Money it’s pure evil” is melodic and will blow you away. The ivory work by Damon and the Floydian guitarsolo by Ace Mark is high class and the arrangements at various points on the track are masterful.“The evils of rock n’ roll” and “Hydra” are two of Bigelf’s heaviest songs, with amazing solos and hard hitting percussion..“Parachuteand “The game” slow things down a bit as it kicks in with Barrett and T-Rex psych leads, while not very original, is extremely catchy. Not my personal favorites on the album, but by no means are they filler. “Counting sheep” breaks the ten-minute mark and goes through lots of tempo and style changes. The closer song is an excellent, strange and various tune where Queen, The Beatles, ELP, The Move, Gracious, Zeppelin, King Crimson but above all Bigelf-bits and pieces flow into each other. Though a little bit too bombastic, this is a very smooth and hypnotic CD that should reach out and touch a variety of people.
In support of the album release you can catch Bigelf on the road throughout Europe and the UK in Sept/October as part of the inaugural Prognation tour headlined by Dream Theater and Opeth. The future looks bright for Bigelf.
