Band : Slauter Xtroyes Slauter Xtroyes were one of the most amazing technical power metal units from the eighties where each member had a crucial role in the band, but unfortunately they never got the attention they deserved. Possibly this is due to only having one release Winter Kill (1985) to date and being rather hard to find. The amazing bass player Brent Sullivan, a cross of Scott Earl (Culprit), Joe Dibiase (Fates Warning), Geddy Lee (Rush) and Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) has an uncanny ability to create bass rhythms that carry songs immensely well and also immediately give SX a singular, unique sound. John Stewart’s voice is powerful, although somewhat lacking in technical finesse. The vocals are sometimes reminiscent of Hades singer Alan Techhio in how they sound, but are often delivered in an overly dramatic and anguished tone that might detract for some. However, it is that honesty of despair that makes it a very good voice at day's end.The drums by Dave Bonow accent Winter Kill superbly, maintaining the bea(s)t in an ever changing array of kicks and fills, to enhance the overall Mercyful Fate toned feeling. The guitar playing by Paul Kratky is an interesting destroying combination of Schenker, Tipton/K.K. Dowing, Sherman/Denner and Iommi-like styles and a large contribution to the band's overall sound. The songs are 5-6 minutes and complex pieces with plenty of instrumental action. The most impressive aspect of the album is its consistency, whilst certain tracks like the title track, “The stage” , “Mother, mother fucker” and “Black rose and thorns” may become fixed in your memory, the album can proudly boast of having all rounded strong structure. A must-have. It's official! Guitarist Paul Kratky and bassist Brent Sullivan have reformed Slauter Xstroyes and practices are underway! and they are already booked for the Up the Hammers (2010) fest in Greece and Keep It True in Germany.
