Band : Steve Morse Band As the guitarist for bands like Dixie Dreggs, Kansas, Living and Deep Purple, Steve Morse built himself quite a reputation in the rockin’ world. As those bands are not so active at the moment, Steve Morse took some time out to work on his 12th solo album Out Standing In Their Field. Some songs are harder than others but none really ventures into what today is called heavy metal. Hard classic rock is a much better description and it all sounds good. There are more levels of emotion and more genre-melding on this CD than I would have expected. Steve knows how to shred, how to switch in mid sentence from heavy rock riff to sweet classic chord progression and how to sustain a vibrant note. He runs the gamut from the blues to funk to country to classic to hardrock in the course of a single track. It features some truly astonishing guitar, both riffs and lead runs, and it flows nicely, something that's not always true about an instrumental guitar album. Although I am unable to compare Out Standing In Their Field to any of Morse’s prior solo works I can say that it is stands proudly on its own merits as a solidly performed gem of classic guitar rock. Yes, Steve Morse is outstanding in his field. 90/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
