Review: CD

One year after the release of the debut-album, Hoffningsschimmer, the German formation Nachtgeschrei releases its second full length release, which mainly goes on in the vein of the first one. Am Rande der Welt, however, having duration of forty seven minutes, is somewhat heavier, sharper, more up-tempo. Musically, the band still combines Rock and Metal with elements from medieval Folk, the latter through the use of traditional instruments as bagpipes and flutes. In a way, Nachtgeschrei’s music sounds as a symbiosis of those bands in the vein of Subway To Sally, In Extremo and Schandmaul (and even Rammstein in a subtle way) at the one hand, and bands à la Eluveitie, Korpiklaani and Ensiferum at the other. It’s a shame, but sometimes the Pagan-atmosphere interacts in a forced way with several almost poppy and neo-romantic parts, and I guess it will rather be a Folk/Goth/Medieval-audience that will adore this release, and not immediately the Metal-hordes from the Dark Lands.
