Band : Been Obscene It is certainly not too often that you encounter a band of Austrian origins playing stoner rock, but Been Obscene are such example and not bad at all. Especially the first few minutes raise high expectations as the title track and “Uniform” in particular are quite memorable. Even though some of the songs such as “Come over” and “Impressions” run in a more ordinary vein, the sound remains consistent until the very end. While the whole thing is not of outstanding quality, the songs are well done and have even some originality, which is clearly more than you could expect from a stoner rock band. It didn't fulfil all of my expectations, that doesn't mean that this is a bad album, because it is not. What I like about this album is the way QOTSA/ Natas/ Colour Haze-like guitar parts are blended with earpleasing indie rocking parts. There's some absolutely stunning subtle-string work in my fave “Demons” that really adds to this song. However, the vocals are not Been Obscene’s greatest asset here. Thomas Nachtegal’s vocal range is a bit limited and is not equal to the musicianship displayed here. Their first album The Magic Table Dance is more than promising and I'm sure that in the future we could hear some good things about this band. 85/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
